Phil would like to say a huge thank you to all the competitors and his event team who all delivered an award winning performance at the British & Northwest Salsa Championships
We’ve had some great emails and calls from competitors and spectators and we’re pleased to hear from you that each year it just keeps on getting better and better. We totally agree with you!
Phil’s competed all over the world and, winning the IDO World Champion Salsa Shine title last year, knows how nerve racking competition can be, so to all those salsaros who stepped up to the challenge and took part, congratulations. You’re all contributing to raising the profile of competitive salsa in Britain and we hope very much to be welcoming you all to the Championships next year.
On behalf of all our competitors, who I’m sure would like to thank the people who made it possible for them to take part and win some amazing prizes, including an all expenses paid trip of a life time to Africa, thanks to our judging teams. Firstly our UKA team led by Ray Bulpit; including Paul Dribbell, David Rawes, David Pollard, and particularly Ansell Chezan for all his advice and contributing to the rules of the competition, and our scrutiner, David Lawson. Secondly, to our judging panel from My Home Town, our co-sponsor, chaired by Mr Mumba Kapumpa who selected fourteen people to perform at their trade fair in Zambia.
For keeping us all to schedule so smoothly, and stylishly, our thanks to our amazing MCs, Rohan Brown and Brian Porter and, for warming up the competitors with his boundless enthusiasm, and for keeping the salsa tracks on track, thanks to our Entertainment Manager Moe Flex and to our DJs, Barry G and Big Andy.
Thanks also to our admin and hospitality team, Karen and Marjorie, who were joined this year by Helen Walker, Helen Taylor, and Marsha Crossland, plus all the other helpers, who worked really hard behind the scenes.
Without all of you, there would be no competition, and Uncle Phil extends his warmfelt gratitude to you all.
We’ll keep the event link active on facebook so you can share your pictures, comments and plans for entry next year!

Rules for all Competitions and Championships
Each Championship and Competition are judged seperately.
The North West Open Amateur Salsa Championship and the North West Open Amateur Bachata Championship will be held before the British Open Amateur and Professional Salsa Championships.
Preliminary and Semi Final Rounds
Couples: Up to six couples will dance an opening 1.5 minutes. Three of these couples will then dance another 1.5 minutes, followed by the next three dancing 1.5 minutes. Then all six couple will dance a closing 1.5 minutes to the organiser’s music. This could be subject to change, depending on the number of entrants in each style. There could also be more than one heat in each round.
Finals
Couples: Depending on the number of entrants, the finals could consist of 5 to 7 couples. All couples will dance 1.5 minutes to the organiser’s music. Each couple will then dance to their own choreographed music, or to the organiser’s music. This dance can be freestyle or choreographed. It must be at least 2 minutes of music to the end of the musical phase, but must not exceed 2.15 minutes. If the music exceeds 2.15, it will automatically be stopped at 2.15 minutes. All couples will then dance another 1.5 minutes to the organiser’s music.
The winners of The North West Open Amateur Salsa Championships will be able to compete in the Amateur British Championships on the same night
Lifts
Lifts and acrobatic moves do not have to be included, but if they are, only low level lifts, not above Leaders shoulders, and only one acrobatic move, for example, a Cartwheel, off of the Leaders legs, will be allowed in the Individual performance only.
General
Amateur couples can compete in the Salsa and Bachata Championships and in the Merengue and Cha Cha Cha Competition. The Professional couples can only compete in the British Championships.
Cha Cha Cha will be judged "On 2"
Judging Criteria for Championships
Partnering for couples
In salsa and bachata, the majority of the performance should be danced with a hold, although shines are allowed. Leading, following and synchronisation will be judged.
Timing
The judges will be observing the timing and breaks. It is important to keep the consistence of the breaking.
The Salsa Dance
Salsa is a very popular club dance in that it allows the dancers much freedom to interpret the music using movements and elements from the many different Latino dances. Salsa means “Sauce” and the dancers should depict a very hot and spicy interaction with each other. The Salsa basics involve clever hand and arm movements as well as changes of handhold while maintaining the flowing movements, which are all typical of the dance.
Music Interpretation and Choreography
Style, control, poise, appearance and execution of the dance. Spacial awareness and use of the dance floor.
Overall Performance
Originality and creativity plus entertainment value. Costumes, confidence and interpretation.
The judges decision is final. The final decision will be overseen by the scrutineer. The judges will decide how many of the Professional couples are eligible to represent Britain at the Istanbul IDO World Championships (note that only the winners will have the flights paid for)

Styles of Salsa
Los Angeles
LA style is danced on one with the break forward on count one.
The style is mainly cross body with “flashy” moves which can consist of tricks and dips and also tends to include “shines”.
LA is influenced by Hollywood and by the swing and mambo dances. It is sometimes considered “more show than dance”!
New York
NY style is generally danced on two with the break back on count two.
The style is mainly cross body in a more slotted/linear execution, with a composed, elegant and smooth look and feel, bringing in a sensual quality.
Cuban
Cuban is mainly danced rotationally as opposed to linearly.
Cuban is characterised by complicated arm movements and wraps and is influenced by the Salsa Casino Style, which is used in Rueda Dancing.
Cuban is considered to be the original salsa style.
Colombian
Colombian is generally danced with no forward and backward motions of the feet.
The most common style is the Cali style with fast spins, swivels and kicks similar to Jive.
The style usually breaks on one and utilizes all eight beats of music.
