MEET OUR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM
Phil Kaila, Championship Host & Director of Salsanorthwest
Everyones Uncle, “Uncle Phil” has built an impressive track record in the competitive world arena, and loves the focus it brings to his performances. It all stepped up a gear in Miami where, with his partner Leah, he became a finalist in the World Salsa Federation Championships in 2006. Following Miami, they were Cup Winners in 2007 and won the IDO World Champion Salsa Shine title in 2008. Now licensed to adjudicate himself, it seems only fitting that the British Dance Council should endorse him to host The Official British Open Salsa Championships 2010.
"Uncle Phil" became passionate about Salsa twelve years ago, and for the last nine has been an inspiring teacher worldwide. Phil has been an Associate of the United Kingdom Alliance (UKA) since 2005, in 2007 became a Licentiate of UKA and is qualified to instruct other teachers.
Philwas originally trained in Ballroom, Swing and Jazz, and with his origins planted deeply in Zambia and South Africa, African based dance adds an extra dimension to his dancing. Once on the dance floor, Phil is a charismatic dancer, adding bags of flavour and never taking a break; seasoned pro or beginner, you feel fantastic, are sure to have fun, and not be allowed to sit down!
Ansell Chezan, Chair Of Judges
We are very fortunate to introduce Ansell as our Chair of Judges his year. Ansell is a Fellow and Examiner of the UKA, a Life Member of the ISTD and IDTA, and holds Championship Adjudicating Licenses with the BDC, WDC, IDSF and IDO.

The deadline for all entries is 28th March 2012.
All competitors must sign a waiver form at registration before taking part in the championship.
All competitors must agree to Salsanorthwest taking photographs and filming the event, which they understand may be used for promotional purposes.
If competitors are dancing to their own choreographed music, this must be provided to Salsanorthwest on two readable CD’s and be no longer than 2 minutes 15 seconds, in length, to musical phrase. For Salsa the music must contain at least 70% Salsa/Mambo/Cuban music containing the traditional clave beat. CD’s must be handed to registration before the start of the competition.
In the event of equipment failure during the competitor’s routine, the competitors will be allowed to restart the routine from the beginning. If the fault is due to the competitors supplied music, the competitors must either continue or end the routine.
Salsanorthwest reserve the right to change the date, venue, or programme if necessary.
Each Championship and Competition are judged separately.
WHAT ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR?
Partnering for couples
The majority of the performance should be danced with a hold, although shines are allowed. Leading, following and synchronisation will be judged.
Timing
The judges will be observing the timing and breaks. It is important to keep the consistence of the breaking.
The Salsa Dance
Salsa is a very popular club dance in that it allows the dancers much freedom to interpret the music using movements and elements from the many different Latino dances. Salsa means “Sauce” and the dancers should depict a very hot and spicy interaction with each other. The Salsa basics involve clever hand and arm movements as well as changes of handhold while maintaining the flowing movements, which are all typical of the dance.
Music Interpretation and Choreography
Style, control, poise, appearance and execution of the dance, Spacial awareness and use of the dance floor will be observed.
Overall Performance
Originality and creativity plus entertainment value will be judged, including costumes, confidence and interpretation.

For keeping us all to schedule so smoothly, and stylishly, our MCs, Rohan Brown and Brian Porter, and to our entertainment team, the party animal himself Nigel May and our DJs, Barry and Les of Mancuban.

Rohan Brown, MC & DJ
Rohan’s diverse pre salsa career has taken him around the world, and into fields such as Pro Basket Ball, Semi Pro Athlete, Politics Major, and international development with NGO’s such as United Nations and VSO, so it’s no surprise that he’s the salsa all rounder too.
His salsa story began whilst working in Puerto Rico, and flourished when returning to his home town of Washington DC. Luckily for us he returned to England and studied salsa with Nelson Baptista, Robert Charlemagne, Leon Rose and Maverick Logan. His style of dance and teaching focuses on Jazz, Body Motion, Cuban, LA and Classic Mambo on 2,and has instructed salsa followers and performed in countries from South Africa to The States.
And as if teaching and performing wasn’t enough, Rohan has know added promoting, Djing and comparing strings to his salsa bow. Rohan Brown, the total package will guide you through The Official British Open Salsa Championships 2010.
As well as being re elected Chairman of the Latino/Caribbean Committee of the IDO, Ansell is also the current Vice President of IDO ENGLAND.
Ansell has been involved with dance from the age of 4, initially trained in Tap, Modern and National. At 21 he was introduced to Ballroom, Latin and Old Time. He became one of the inaugural members of the UKA Club Dance committee that introduced Salsa on a Qualified Professional level. He is responsible for qualifying over 500 teachers, around the world.
Ansell has taught, lectured, examined and judged around the globe, as well as performing, and dancing on various TV shows. In 2007 his work for the UK Salsa scene was formally recognised with the presentation of the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in 2007.
Paul Dribbell, Judge
Paul Dribbell is a Licentiate in Salsa with the UKA, for whom he has lectured. He is also qualified in Hip Hop and Belly Dance. Not only a judge for local competitions, he has drawn on his knowledge and technical skills to now become a Licensed Championship Adjudicator for the British Dance Council.
As well as teaching, Paul has performed, been a model and has appeared in the film Brideshead Revisited.
Paul is delighted to be working alongside Phil and his team of Salsa Northwest for these Championships.
More judges are joining the team very shortly, watch this space!
Brian Porter, Support MC

Brian originally trained in Dance at the acclaimed Laban Centre, in London, leading to many contracts as both a performer and teacher, nationally and internationally: touring in Dance, Opera and Theatre. Work has also included teaching and choreographing in many settings: from professional commissions for theatre; through to pieces for schools, colleges and groups; to individual coaching for dance enthusiasts. Brian also teaches regular salsa classes, which include the full range of Latin dances. Passionate about dance, Brian regularly dances ballroom and Latin and has more recently discovered Argentine Tango – leading to a special trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Barry G - DJ
Barry G is resident DJ for Salsanorthwest, and regularly plays at Salsology, Tower Inferno, GBSEx and many other events across the UK. Barry G will be on hand to play the best Latin tracks at the Championship After Party, and throughout the Championship heats.
And our crew … with whom we couldn’t manage without, Helen, our Event Manager, our “other Helen”, general all rounder and fixer of any problems, Dipesh, Runner, Gemma, Judge Runner, and Karen and Marjorie who will greet spectators and formally register all of our competitors at registration. Phil would like to say a huge thank you to all the competitors and his event team who all delivered an award winning performance at the British & Northwest Salsa Championships
We’ve had some great emails and calls from competitors and spectators and we’re pleased to hear from you that each year it just keeps on getting better and better. We totally agree with you!
Phil’s competed all over the world and, winning the IDO World Champion Salsa Shine title last year, knows how nerve racking competition can be, so to all those salsaros who stepped up to the challenge and took part, congratulations. You’re all contributing to raising the profile of competitive salsa in Britain and we hope very much to be welcoming you all to the Championships next year.
On behalf of all our competitors, who I’m sure would like to thank the people who made it possible for them to take part and win some amazing prizes, including an all expenses paid trip of a life time to Africa, thanks to our judging teams. Firstly our UKA team led by Ray Bulpit; including Paul Dribbell, David Rawes, David Pollard, and particularly Ansell Chezan for all his advice and contributing to the rules of the competition, and our scrutiner, David Lawson. Secondly, to our judging panel from My Home Town, our co-sponsor, chaired by Mr Mumba Kapumpa who selected fourteen people to perform at their trade fair in Zambia.
For keeping us all to schedule so smoothly, and stylishly, our thanks to our amazing MCs, Rohan Brown and Brian Porter and, for warming up the competitors with his boundless enthusiasm, and for keeping the salsa tracks on track, thanks to our Entertainment Manager Moe Flex and to our DJs, Barry G and Big Andy.
Thanks also to our admin and hospitality team, Karen and Marjorie, who were joined this year by Helen Walker, Helen Taylor, and Marsha Crossland, plus all the other helpers, who worked really hard behind the scenes.
Without all of you, there would be no competition, and Uncle Phil extends his warmfelt gratitude to you all.

Rules for all Competitions and Championships
Each Championship and Competition are judged seperately.
The North West Open Amateur Salsa Championship and the North West Open Amateur Bachata Championship will be held before the British Open Amateur and Professional Salsa Championships.
Preliminary and Semi Final Rounds
Couples: Up to six couples will dance an opening 1.5 minutes. Three of these couples will then dance another 1.5 minutes, followed by the next three dancing 1.5 minutes. Then all six couple will dance a closing 1.5 minutes to the organiser’s music. This could be subject to change, depending on the number of entrants in each style. There could also be more than one heat in each round.
Finals
Couples: Depending on the number of entrants, the finals could consist of 5 to 7 couples. All couples will dance 1.5 minutes to the organiser’s music. Each couple will then dance to their own choreographed music, or to the organiser’s music. This dance can be freestyle or choreographed. It must be at least 2 minutes of music to the end of the musical phase, but must not exceed 2.15 minutes. If the music exceeds 2.15, it will automatically be stopped at 2.15 minutes. All couples will then dance another 1.5 minutes to the organiser’s music.
The winners of The North West Open Amateur Salsa Championships will be able to compete in the Amateur British Championships on the same night
Lifts
Lifts and acrobatic moves do not have to be included, but if they are, only low level lifts, not above Leaders shoulders, and only one acrobatic move, for example, a Cartwheel, off of the Leaders legs, will be allowed in the Individual performance only.
General
Amateur couples can compete in the Salsa and Bachata Championships and in the Merengue and Cha Cha Cha Competition. The Professional couples can only compete in the British Championships.
Cha Cha Cha will be judged "On 2"
Judging Criteria for Championships
Partnering for couples
In salsa and bachata, the majority of the performance should be danced with a hold, although shines are allowed.
Style, control, poise, appearance and execution of the dance. Spacial awareness and use of the dance floor.
Overall Performance
Originality and creativity plus entertainment value. Costumes, confidence and interpretation.
The judges decision is final. The final decision will be overseen by the scrutineer. The judges will decide how many of the Professional couples are eligible to represent Britain at the Istanbul IDO World Championships (note that only the winners will have the flights paid for)

Styles of Salsa
Los Angeles
LA style is danced on one with the break forward on count one.
The style is mainly cross body with “flashy” moves which can consist of tricks and dips and also tends to include “shines”.
LA is influenced by Hollywood and by the swing and mambo dances. It is sometimes considered “more show than dance”!
New York
NY style is generally danced on two with the break back on count two.
The style is mainly cross body in a more slotted/linear execution, with a composed, elegant and smooth look and feel, bringing in a sensual quality.
Cuban
Cuban is mainly danced rotationally as opposed to linearly.
Cuban is characterised by complicated arm movements and wraps and is influenced by the Salsa Casino Style, which is used in Rueda Dancing.
Cuban is considered to be the original salsa style.
Colombian
Colombian is generally danced with no forward and backward motions of the feet.
The most common style is the Cali style with fast spins, swivels and kicks similar to Jive.
The style usually breaks on one and utilizes all eight beats of music.
