SWAY TO GO: Phil Kaila and Leah Pritchard dancing in the Salsa World championships in Austria
A COUPLE of steps in the right direction saw England reach the world cup finals salsa dancing.
But just like the country's football team, Phil Kaila and Leah Pritchard missed out while the Italians went on to become champions.
Phil, who teaches at Euro's Bar in Salford, Blackburn, and his niece Leah danced their way to seventh place in the World International Dance Organisation Salsa Championships.
Phil said: "We were very nervous, as the Italians are excellent dancers and are very competition minded. They hold competitions in Italy nearly every week.
"The championships started at 11am and ended at 1am. There were many other dances in the championships as well as the salsa, so we had to wait in between these heats as well."
The couple danced off competition from 65 other couples to reach 7th place.
There were 72 couples who entered the competition, from 15 countries with 31 couples representing Italy.
Despite the efforts of Phil, 49, and Leah, 20, and couples from Turkey and Kenya, Italy still proved they were top of the world when the won first, second, fifth and sixth place.
Phil Kaila said: "We couldn't believe it when we reached the finals, as all the other couples were absolutely brilliant.
"And we had beaten Italian couples who had beaten us previously in other championships."
Phil, from Preston and Leah, from Fulwood, came third in the UK Salsa Championships, which qualified them for World International Dance Organisation Salsa Championships held in Seefeld, Austria, on July 8.
Phil said: "I am passionate about salsa. I have been dancing salsa for nine years and have been teaching for six years.
"As well as teaching, I enjoy competing in salsa championships.
"We have had a lot of demand from students in the area who want to learn salsa dancing.
They would have to travel to Preston or St Annes if they wanted Salsa lessons."
